Welcome to Winterbourne Nursery and Infant School

Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will take. As well as providing existing parents with vital information about our school one of the other purposes of this website is to help you make that decision. Here you will find detailed information about the life and work of the school, our aims and values and how we put these into practice in order to support each individual child’s development.

At Winterbourne Nursery and Infant school our aim is to help each other towards excellence in all that we do. We want all of the children to reach their full potential, and not just academically. We want all of the children to be successful at reading, writing and mathematics but also aim to meet each child’s personal, social and emotional development needs. We promote high standards of behaviour, self-confidence, positive attitudes and strong moral values including respect and tolerance of others.

Ours is a school that continually celebrates both effort and success and the diversity of our community. Our Ofsted monitoring visits confirms we are on the way to being a good school. The school has a friendly atmosphere and pupils are happy and well looked after.

We are a thriving four-form entry infant school set within the heart of a highly diverse community, with over 50 different languages spoken by our children, families and staff.  Close to Norbury train station and within easy reach of other transport links, we are a popular choice for parents and prospective staff.  We are fortunate to have a 104 place Nursery attached to our school, providing children from the age of three with a rich and creative learning environment, helping them to develop as confident and independent young people. We have an Enhanced Learning Provision as part of our Nursery provision. The ELP provides high quality specialist teaching for children with social communication difficulties. Children from the ELP will have daily opportunities for mainstream inclusion free play with children from the main nursery classes.

At WNIS, children learn about their rights we encourage our children to be the best they possibly can be in their learning and behaviour.  We recognise the individuality and uniqueness of every child.

Pupils at our school achieve at least in line with the national average at the end of Year 2. We are proud of the fact that children who join us make excellent progress from their starting point and become confident learners in a very short space of time. We offer a curriculum which is broad, creative and encourages children to learn in a practical way as much as possible. We promote global awareness and have an absolute commitment to meeting the needs of all children. Inclusion is an incredibly important part of our ethos so do take a look at our SEN Information Report for more details about our work in this area.

The partnership between home and school is incredibly important in the overall development of the child and we work hard to ensure that the school is a welcoming place for everyone. We make ourselves accessible and provide guidance for parents on how to support their child’s overall development.

We provide opportunities for you to get to know other parents and carers by organising coffee mornings, fund raising events, offering stay and play sessions and through the numerous workshops and courses that we run across the year.

We are proud of our school and achievements to date but are constantly seeking ways to improve. Each year we seek the views of parents and children and ask for feedback about our school and ideas to support us in making Winterbourne Nursery and Infant school an even better place to learn.

We are always delighted to receive visitors, so do come and have a look around the school if you can. By visiting, you will be able to get a feel for our ethos and see our values in action.
