Intent

At Winterbourne Nursery and Infant School, PSHE is at the heart of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually; ‘The Winterbourne Child’.

Implementation

Within EYFS, PSED forms the foundation of all learning. PSHE is taught in KS1 on a weekly basis, following Jigsaw PSHE scheme, a mindful approach to PSHE. We follow statutory objectives listed in the Relationships and Sex Education Guidance by the Department for Education. This states that primary schools should develop children’s understanding on what a respectful relationship is, with family and friends, in all contexts, including online platforms.

Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.

Impact

We do not formally assess PSHE, however we can see the impact of our PSHE curriculum due to the friendships the children create, knowing that we have not needed to formally exclude any child and the children are confident learners who have empathy for others.
